Choose the Right Cleanser
Picking a cleanser is like choosing the perfect coffee—it’s gotta suit your taste, or in this case, your skin type. For oily or acne-prone skin, go for a gel or foaming cleanser with salicylic acid (BHA) to keep oil in check and pores clear; CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is a solid pick. If your skin’s dry or sensitive, opt for a creamy, hydrating cleanser with soothing ingredients like ceramides or aloe—I’m obsessed with La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Cleanser.
Combination skin? A gentle, balanced option like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser works wonders. Normal skin types have it easy; most mild cleansers, like Fresh Soy Face Cleanser, do the trick. Steer clear of harsh soaps or alcohol-heavy formulas—they’ll strip your skin’s natural oils. I made that mistake once, and my face felt like it was screaming for mercy.
How to Clean Your Face Properly
Cleansing is an art, and it’s easier than you think to get it right. Start by removing makeup or sunscreen with a makeup remover or micellar water, like Bioderma Sensibio H2O, using a cotton pad to wipe away mascara and SPF. Next, wet your face with lukewarm water—hot water dries you out, and cold doesn’t magically “open” pores (sorry, that’s a myth). Take a dime-sized amount of your cleanser and massage it gently in circular motions for 30-60 seconds, covering your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin.
Don’t forget your hairline and jawline—dirt loves those spots. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water to remove all residue, as leftover cleanser can irritate. Finally, pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel—no rubbing, please. I keep a stack of face towels just for this. Cleanse twice daily: morning to refresh, night to wash away the day. If you’re sweaty mid-day, like after a workout, a quick water rinse is enough to avoid over-cleansing.
